Who We Are

The AARP Foundation is the charitable arm of AARP. Tax Aide is the largest of several programs the AARP Foundation has in place to help people (mostly 50+ years of age with low to moderate incomes) have a financially secure retirement.

Tax Aide has been around since 1968. We are the largest all-volunteer free tax preparation service in the US with sites in all fifty states. While Tax Aide focuses on people 50+ with low-and moderate incomes we prepare tax returns for people of any age or income level.  All tax return preparation and e-filing is 100% free.  AARP membership is not required.

In 2024, Tax Aide’s 28,000 IRS certified volunteers served over 1.7 million people across the US.

In Wisconsin, Tax Aide has 69 tax preparation sites across the state. Last year, our 600 Wisconsin volunteers served over 26,000 taxpayers and returned $36 million in refunds and credits.

Tax Aide has been in Brown County and NE Wisconsin for over 30 years. We have 6 sites in Brown County with another 4 sites in Door and Marinette Counties.  For tax-year 2024 our 75 local volunteers prepared federal and state tax returns for over 2,900 people returning over $2.8 million in refunds and credits to them.

What We Do

Our volunteers prepare Federal and state tax returns for people in NE Wisconsin.  No prior tax return experience is required.  We will train you.  Following training, you will be certified as a tax preparer by the IRS.  All training is free.  Tax Aide provides all materials and equipment needed to prepare returns.

Volunteers work one to two days per week at one of ten area sites in NE Wisconsin (six in Brown County, three in Door County, and one Marinette County).   We work in a group environment following procedures developed by the IRS and Tax Aide.   Schedules are flexible.  Tax season runs from February through mid-April each year.  Training is in December and January.
