Who We Are

Our mission is to build stable homes, strong futures, and vibrant communities. Our work comes from a simple notion: Home is the foundation for everything in life. Home should be a safe place to land — not another source of worry. Having a place to call your own is a basic right for everyone. We were founded in part as a response to racial and economic injustices in the communities we serve. Since the early 1970s, CommonBond Communities has provided homes and supportive services for those most in need. Now, over 50 years later, injustices clearly still exist and our mission is more relevant than ever. Our expertise ranges from interacting with officials on complex legislation and developing properties, to making sure a child has a safe place to do homework and caring for homeless populations and veterans. In spite of the obstacles and systems that exist to hold people back, we persevere in order to create equitable housing that’s affordable for all.

What We Do

Stable homes. Strong futures. Vibrant communities. A safe, stable, and affordable home is the foundation for everything in life. It’s the place where each person can find what they need to meet their goals and build their best life. In other words, a CommonBond community. CommonBond is an affordable housing nonprofit organization that creates communities throughout Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and South Dakota to help people of all ages and walks of life meet their goals and thrive. With five decades of working with vulnerable populations as an affordable housing organization, we know that when people have stability in their homes, children do better in school, teens graduate, adults find jobs with wages to support their families, and older adults maintain their independence. For those experiencing poverty, access to affordable housing is the most fundamental indicator of long-term success. And more importantly, for each of these people, lack of access to a home can be overwhelming, and potentially isolating. This is why we’ve built a comprehensive approach to affordable housing, creating proactive partnerships with CommonBond residents to help them navigate complex systems that disrupt positive outcomes. This array of life-changing programs and services demonstrates time and time again that, given the right opportunities, every person can flourish. Supporting our residents is so much more than building stronger economic outcomes for the neighborhoods we work with; it’s the right thing to do. Programming is available to all CommonBond residents and is tied to four strategic priorities: Stability & Independence; Health and Wellness; Education & Advancement; and Community Building & Engagement.
