Have you ever wondered about the guests’ experience of entering a homeless shelter? It may be their first time, or their hundredth time. Their belongings and persons are searched. They may be feeling unsettled, worried or nervous. But together, we can create an environment where guests know they are welcome and valued.
As a check-in volunteer, you can be a part of welcoming guests into shelter each evening with a smile and conversation. You can honor guests' dignity and build trust and rapport every single time you volunteer.
After guests have been searched by security staff, volunteers will build rapport with guests as they facilitate check-in activities such as bunk and chore assignments (via a tablet or laptop). This is a great opportunity to have a friendly touch point with guests, learn their names and have brief conversations. We want guests to feel 'at home' in a supportive community.
Available 7 days per week 4:30-7:30pm at St. John's Ministries Men's Shelter
