INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:
Gain hands-on experience in promoting health to students and parents in the community by helping coordinate and assist school garden education sessions and recipe demonstrations at local elementary schools. We are looking for 3-4 interns for this upcoming semester. Together with the GROW board, other interns, and volunteers you will lead an essential role in providing community nutrition education, along with assisting our program directors in garden education sessions and recipe demonstration, interns will also enhance their experiences when coordinating volunteers, overseeing garden maintenance, building relationships, evaluating programs, documenting, and community organizing.
TIME COMMITMENT:
Approximately 6-8 hrs/wk totaling a minimum of 90 hours for the semester. Some interns have taken this as an independent study and received credit. Nutrition programming and meetings can be planned around intern’s schedule as long as 5 hours a week are during elementary school hours (8am-3pm). Other requirements can be done throughout each week as you have time.
REQUIREMENTS:
Nutrition/Sustainability Education Interns will be responsible for assisting the program directors with garden classes, helping facilitate garden maintenance tasks and organization of produce getting from garden to cafeteria or classroom, and assisting with volunteer coordination; in addition to weekly meetings with your supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
We are looking for someone who can work independently and as part of a team, is comfortable working with children, has experience coordinating and working with volunteers, and the ability to get from their house to each school - the furthest one is 3.5 miles from UWL campus. Nutrition and garden knowledge is preferred.
