INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION: Gain hands-on experience in promoting health to students and parents in the community by helping coordinate maintenance tasks to keep our school gardens in full operation for our local elementary schools. We are looking for 1-2 interns for this upcoming semester. Together with the Grow board, other interns, and volunteers you will lead an essential role in providing and maintaining these unique outdoor learning platforms. Along with the maintenance projects and tasks, interns will also enhance their experiences when coordinating volunteers, building relationships, evaluating programs, documenting, and community organizing.
TIME COMMITMENT: Approximately 6-8 hrs/week totaling a minimum of 90 hours for the semester. Some interns have taken this as an independent study and received credit. Maintenance coordinating, onsite work days, and meetings can be planned around intern’s schedule as long as 4 hours a week during elementary school hours (8-3pm). Other requirements can be done throughout each week as you have time.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Interns are expected to attend weekly meetings with the operations director for scheduled projects and tasks and communicating with the community when organizing volunteers days and larger work parties.
QUALIFICATIONS: We are looking for someone who can work independently and as part of a team, is comfortable working in gardens, has experience coordinating volunteers, and the ability to get from their house to each school – the furthest one is 3.5 miles from the UWL campus.
Prior garden knowledge is required, nutrition knowledge is preferred.
