Who We Are
WXPR Public Radio is an independent, listener-supported public radio station serving Northern and Central Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
WXPR began broadcasting in 1983 with the mission to inform citizens of the significant issues facing society, explore cultural diversity through music, arts and public affairs programming and community events, and provide the opportunity for citizens to participate in all aspects of community broadcasting. WXPR is the dream of Peter Nordgren, a teacher at Bemidji State University in Minnesota in the 1970's. He moved to Rhinelander and incorporated White Pine Community Broadcasting Inc. in 1979 with the goal of someday creating an Independent, community-based public radio station for the Northwoods region. That dream came to fruition when WXPR began broadcasting on April 24th, 1983 on 91.7 FM. This signal was later broadcast through repeaters in the Ironwood-Hurley region on 100.9 FM and part time in the Wausau region on 91.9 FM WXPW, and now net streaming on the Internet at WXPR.ORG.
What We Do
WXPR is a community-supported public radio station; one of the best examples of that support are the people that make WXPR a day-to-day reality. In addition to our paid staff, WXPR relies on the efforts of more than 100 volunteers. Our station is overseen and governed by a Board of Directors and receives input from a Community Advisory Board. The input and enthusiasm from our volunteers and board members helps shape the WXPR that you enjoy every day. We invite you to learn more about the people that keep WXPR humming along and how you can volunteer your time, too.
