Help the next generation of mariners to discover their interest in Door County Maritime History by being a Field Trip Docent! Field Trip docents lead groups of children from pre-school through High School age through their museum experience. The amount of factual information conveyed will vary by age of the students, with the emphasis being a positive impression more than a lot of factual details.

Share the history and ongoing story of Sturgeon Bay's Working Waterfront as a docent in the Jim Kress Maritime Lighthouse Tower! Tower Docents are stationed on the 10th floor of the tower to answer questions, provide directions, and encourage visitors to continue their experience in the tower. If you have a friendly personality and like chatting with people, this is a great role for you. No prior experience is required, training is provided.

Share the tales of hard-working anglers, brave ship captains, skilled craftsmen, bold inventors and lonely lighthouse keepers by guiding pre-scheduled groups through the museum. Museum docents guide groups through the four galleries in the legacy museum and ten stories of the Jim Kress Maritime Lighthouse Tower. No prior knowledge required, all information and training is provided. Docents choose their tours , which vary based on the scheduling of the groups. If you enjoy telling stories and sharing information, this role is for you!

Assist visitors with crossing the famous Cana Island Causeway to visit the historic lighthouse! Our drivers operate a John Deere tractor towing a wooden wagon to take passengers across the causeway connecting the island to the mainland. Experience with similar machinery is helpful but not required. Drivers must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record.

Share the stories and history of the tug John Purves with visitors from around the world! Tours are conducted four times per day May 1 - October 31, running 45-50 minutes each. Docents can choose their shifts and opt for half-day or full-day shifts. Additional tours may be scheduled for tour groups, docents choose to take the additional tours. 

Docent manual with all information as well as in person training and support is provided. No nautical history is required, just an interest and willingness to learn!

The Sunflower Cottage provides day respite for individuals and families of those with memory related diseases such as Alzheimer's and dementia. This program is part of Sunshine Resources, which is an organization is Door County that provides day, employment, and education services to adults with disabilities. Our clients receive individualized care and would be thrilled to spend time with kind and dedicated volunteers.

There are so many fun activities in the Sunflower Cottage! We cook, bake, play games, read, and enjoy the many volunteers who come to share their time with our clients. There is always something fun going on, and often we have local musicians, therapy dogs, and other organizations share their talents with everyone at Sunshine Resources and the Sunflower Cottage.
