Volunteer: Reception & Shelter Aid - Cathedral Center Emergency Shelter

The Cathedral Center's Emergency Shelter serves women and families experiencing homelessness. At any given point, an average of 50 adults and children reside at the shelter, and can stay for up to 90 days. Adult guests work with case managers to set and achieve goals, find long-term housing, and access other resources they may need (i.e., workforce development, medical, mental health).

Reception & Shelter Aid volunteers are needed Monday - Friday between 8am - 2pm (except Federal holidays) to assist our Shelter Receptionist with front desk coverage and special projects. Tasks may include answering the phone and front door buzzer, giving out supplies to Shelter guests, sorting and organizing donations and other inventory, assisting Shelter guests with laundry, and more. The Reception & Shelter Aid Volunteer is also another friendly face who helps Shelter guests feel safe and welcome! As a trauma-informed agency, we require this to be a recurring commitment, ideally weekly, so that we can provide consistency for our Shelter guests. Each shift would be a minimum of 2 hours.

A caregiver background check is required for this role, per Milwaukee County regulations. Orientation is mandatory for new volunteers - orientation includes an agency overview and a review of basic trauma-informed care principles.

If you are interested in learning more or signing up, please contact Jeannie Stranzl, Volunteer and In-Kind Gift Coordinator at volunteer@cathedral-center.org . Thank you!

Volunteer: Hospitality Program: Provide and/or Serve Dinner at an Emergency Shelter

Volunteers help us keep things running smoothly and provide the comforts of home through our Hospitality Program

Individuals and groups can sign up to provide a hot dinner which they purchase, prepare, and/or deliver to our clients on one-time or recurring basis. Our Hospitality Program is great for parish groups, clubs and organizations, corporate groups, and friends and families who want to serve a home cooked meal with a friendly face. Hospitality volunteers are needed every day of the year, including holidays! We prefer that Hospitality volunteers provide and serve the meal; however, if you are interested in serving but unable to provide the meal, we do have several dates per month available for serving-only volunteers. Likewise, volunteers who are able to provide the meal but not serve it would have the option of dropping the meal off for Shelter staff to serve.

A basic background check via a Wisconsin Circuit Court records search is conducted for every Hospitality volunteer.

If you are interested in learning more or signing up, please contact Jeannie Stranzl, Volunteer and In-Kind Gift Coordinator at volunteer@cathedral-center.org . Thank you!
