Opportunities From: Volunteer Wisconsin

Volunteer: Tar Sands volunteer

Tar sands pipelines carry some of the dirtiest, most energy intensive and toxic fuels on the planet. We have several of them in Wisconsin, and right now we're fighting to shut down tar sands Line 5 in northern Wisconsin which is threatening the homelands and waters of the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Chippewa. This is their sovereign territory, yet Enbridge has refused for over a decade to remove the pipeline as asked, and instead are proposing a reroute that would put many more lands and waters at risk. Join our fight to protect indigenous people's and their rights by joining our tar sands team and help organize and generate more public opposition to this dirty pipeline. It's time to put people and the planet ahead of profits!

We are looking for help to distribute Line 5 yard signs so people can show their support. Another project is to set a world's record for making origami fish to support shutting down Line 5 - "Oil and water don't mix!" (See opportunity description for "Assembling origami fish".)

Volunteer: Brighton Hospice Vet-to-Vet Companion

At Brighton Hospice, we care about the veterans we serve and want to do all we can to recognize each and every one of them. Our Vet-to-Vet Volunteer Program is one of the ways that we acknowledge and remember one’s military service. As in all aspects of hospice work, volunteers play an integral role in caring for our patients; but there is a special and unique bond, a camaraderie, that forms when one veteran talks with another. It is often easier for veteran patients to share his or her military history when they feel understood by another Veteran, making the opportunity for connection and healing much more meaningful.

Are you interested in helping us honor our veterans? Consider joining our team! We have an immediate need for men and women, who are veterans, on active-duty or in the reserves, from all branches of our military, to provide support and companionship to other veterans at end-of-life. In addition to being a veteran companion, veteran volunteers may also take part in our Veteran’s Oral History Program, Honor Ceremonies and community outreach.

Through our partnership with *We Honor Veterans (WHV), our hospice team, including volunteers, receives ongoing veteran-specific education so that we are better prepared to address a veteran’s unique needs at end of life. We also provide infection control education and any necessary PPE to ensure you are prepared and comfortable in your role as a Brighton Volunteer.

We currently have a need for Vet-to-Vet Volunteers in the Greater Milwaukee area. We do take into account your location to assign patient visits that are within or near your own community. The amount of time you give is flexible and scheduled around your availability.

Contact Emily, Volunteer Coordinator, at: 262-281-2062 or ewammer@brightonhospice.com, for more information on becoming a Hospice Companion with Brighton Hospice. You can also find us on the web at www.brightonhospice.com.

*WHV was created by the National Hospice & Palliative Care Organization, in collaboration with the Dept. of Veterans Affairs, to empower hospice professionals to meet the unique needs of dying veterans

Volunteer: Pet Therapy to Brighton the Day for Hospice Patients

One of the most frequent requests made by Brighton’s hospice patients is to be visited by a furry companion. Pet therapy, also known as animal-assisted therapy, in the hospice setting is so much more than a simple visit with an animal. The unconditional love and affection of a therapy animal does so much to lift the spirit of those on their end-of life journey. Not only are these visits a welcome distraction from the daily routine, but therapy animal visits also promote activity, conversation and emotional connection between the patient and the animal and handler.

We welcome dogs, cats, rabbits & more; however, we require all animals and handlers to be evaluated by a recognized organization specializing in the certification of therapy animals prior to visiting with hospice patients. These organizations have strict criteria for prospective therapy pets to ensure that both handler and animal have proper training and are fully prepared to safely interact with patients and their families.

If your pet has not been through the therapy certification process and you don’t know where to begin, contact us for more information on local pet therapy organizations. In the meantime, ask us how you can participate in Animal-Related Engagement Activities (virtual opportunity).

The amount of time you give is flexible and scheduled around your availability. We do take into account your location to assign patient visits that are within or near your own community. We currently have a need for hospice companions in the Milwaukee area. Including Washington County, Waukesha County, Ozaukee County, and Milwaukee County.

Volunteer: Brighton Hospice Compassionate Companion

When you are visiting with a Brighton Hospice patient, everything you do can make a difference. Things you might not think twice about can be something they will remember and truly appreciate. Taking the time to have a meaningful conversation, listening to their stories and memories, going outside to enjoy a beautiful day, helping complete a legacy project, or simply sitting quietly while holding their hand - most often this is all that is needed to make a difference in another’s life.

Brighton Hospice is guided by our commitment to excellence in providing patient-centered care. Brighton Volunteers help us fulfill that commitment in a non-medical way. Our volunteers receive specialized training and ongoing support that prepares them to work side-by side with the hospice team. We also provide infection control education and any necessary PPE to ensure you are prepared and comfortable in your role as a patient companion.

The amount of time you give is flexible and scheduled around your availability. We do take into account your location to assign patient visits that are within or near your own community. We currently have a need for hospice companions throughout the Milwaukee area, including All the way up to Menomonee Falls, or down by Oak Creek, as well as over by Waukesha.

Volunteer: Gift of Love Program Committee

Chix 4 a Cause has a mission of helping to ease the burden of cancer... one Gift of Love at a time. As a volunteer-led organization, we are looking for a special person or persons to help with our Gift of Love program (GOL).

We need an empathetic person to help interview GOL nominees (cancer patients). Ideal volunteers would also help put together Gifts of Love using our supply at the office and complete other tasks for our unique Gifts of Love. Our volunteer would also go along on some of the presentations of the Gifts of Love to the recipients.

Best candidates for this position would be those in current or prior medical professions, cancer survivors or family/friends of cancer survivors/patients, or just those who truly understand the hardships, burdens, and roller-coaster that is a cancer diagnosis.

While the time spent will vary for this position, Chix 4 a Cause typically does between 5 and 9 Gifts of Love per month. This position will have support, training, and appreciation from Chix 4 a Cause staff. Our volunteer would not have to "do it all" for each gift. Presentation of a Gift of Love is usually about one hour. Interviews can vary between 20 minutes and an hour if the cancer fighter would like an understanding ear.

Please reach out if you are considering this position. We are seeking 2 to 3 individuals for this position. All volunteers for this position must pass a background check as they are privy to private information for the cancer patients applying to be a Gift of Love Recipient.

Volunteer: Share some sunshine with kids in need - Learn about advocacy this summer!

We hope you can soak up some summer sun this season AND think about how you can bring some of that light to children in need.

At CASA of the Fox Cities, we'll teach you how to advocate for children who have experienced abuse or neglect. If you are a good communicator who wants good things for children, this could be an excellent opportunity to truly make an impact. No special experience is required. We provide initial and ongoing training and support.

As a CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocate, you will be part of a team of people advocating for the safety and well-being of youth and children who have experienced abuse or neglect.

You will do this by:

Learning about them Spending time with them Collaborating with others including social workers, attorneys, and direct service providers Identify unmet needs or services that might be beneficial to the child Provide written reports to the court on a regular basis

No special experience is required! We will train you and you will serve alongside a staff member throughout your advocacy.

One of the most important results of your service is laying the foundation for resilience. Your continued presence in their lives tells them they are worthy of your time and attention. This feeling of worth is the building block of resilience that will help them overcome adverse childhood experiences.

Statistics show that the presence of just one consistent adult helps children who have experienced trauma. Could you be that person?

The best way to discover if advocacy could be right for you is to check out our website and attend an information session. These one-hour sessions are held remotely via Zoom. You will learn about our organization, and things to consider about becoming an advocate including training, how much time you’ll need, and so on.

Contact Leah for a link to an information session, or to find something that works with your schedule. You can reach her at leah@casafc.org or 920-257-4733 ext. 107.

We only train advocates 4 times a year. Our next training session begins in July 2024. Join us! Together, we'll bring the light of resilience to children who are waiting for their advocate.

Volunteer: Embrace Your Pace Walk Volunteer

We are excited to introduce a new initiative titled the "Embrace Your Pace Initiative.” For context, the Senior Activity Center's existing Outdoor Adventures Group typically meets at The Hub/Volunteer Center/MOWA Parking Area and explores the Eisenbahn Trail, covering various points of interest, including downtown West Bend, River Walk, Riverside Park, Labyrinth, Regner Park, etc.

Recognizing the challenge of accommodating individuals with varying levels of mobility, Interfaith Caregivers of Washington County and the Center’s team proposed the formation of an entirely new group. This specific Outdoor Adventures Group will be specifically tailored for individuals with canes, walkers, walking aids, wheelchairs (accompanied by a helper), etc. Thus the "Embrace Your Pace Initiative.”

Need:

- We are looking for volunteers to help guide the individuals along the Eisenbahn Trail for a up to a 30-minute walk.

- Starting point is on the East side of The Hub - near the outdoor sculptures. This is also where there is a public parking lot for additional parking. "Eisenbahn trail parking in West Bend"

- Walks will be held the first Wednesday of the month (Weather permitting) - volunteers can join any month they are able. (June 5, July 3, Aug 7, Sept 4, Oct 2, Nov 6)

- Timeframe: 10-11am. Help gather the participants starting at 10am - prompt walk start at 10:30am.

- If there are numerous volunteers, you can “buddy up” with a participant for conversation.

- Participants are welcome to gather at The Hub for coffee and conversation afterwards.

Interested? Contact Clare at 262-365-0902 or clare@ifc4seniors.org

Volunteer: Office Volunteer

Sometimes hospice can be scary for people, and they want to help but aren't sure how if they don't feel comfortable visiting patients. Becoming an office support volunteer is a perfect avenue. With your help, patients will continue to receive quick, accurate, and reliable service. Office staff are often the "unsung heroes" but not around here! Without help keeping our files in good order, maintaining good communication with doctors and facilities, it would be impossible to provide the high level of patient-centered, family-focused care that we do. We would love to have you join our team and experience the satisfaction of knowing that the ill and vulnerable are having a better day because of you. You have a variety of office duties to choose from: filing; monthly bereavement mailings; copying; organizing resources; sending, receiving and distributing faxes; and special projects.

This could also be the perfect volunteer opportunity for a student wanting a career in an office setting.

Volunteer: Hospice Volunteer

Being a hospice volunteer is an intensely rewarding experience.  Volunteers are given the choice as to what types of things you want to do and how much time you want to contribute (usually 1-2 hours per week).  Interim HealthCare believes that volunteers are often the heart of the origination because they give the gift of time to those in need. Volunteers provide support to patients who are near the end of life as well as their family, and caregivers.  Help is provided wherever the patient considers home, which could be their own house, apartment, an assisted living, or skilled nursing facility.  The goal is to help maximize quality of life when quantity of life is limited. There are two types of volunteers, Patient Volunteers and Office Volunteers.

Patient Volunteers perform some of the following:

Visiting and companionship which can include: reading to the patient knitting watching favorite movies word searches reminiscing  listening to favorite songs or singing along Taking walks Writing letters Visiting with pets (must provide vaccine information)  Giving respite relief for caregivers Shopping and errands Meal preparation

Office Volunteers may also choose to help in the office with mailing, computer work, organizing supplies, and administrative duties.  Some volunteers have special training to help provide grief support.

Volunteers are required to complete an interview and about 9 hours of training.  They also receive ongoing support and training from the hospice care team.  Hospice education covers philosophy of hospice care; services offered by hospice; physical, emotional, social, and spiritual issues encountered at the end of life; effective communication when speaking with patients and family members; comfort care; the dying process; and basic information about grief and loss.

If you are interested in this opportunity, respond to this post via email or phone call!

Volunteer: Phone Pal

A phone pal is like a pen pal, but instead of writing letters, it is talking over the phone! A phone pal is someone who is not able to go into a facility or a patient's home but calls them and talks to them over the phone. This person would call the patient and talk with them and be a friendly listening ear to a patient on hospice. While it may not be in person, it still gives an outlet to the patient of a person to talk to, someone to listen, and build comradery with to let them know they are not alone. A friendly caller may also make tuck in calls. Tuck in calls is where a person calls a patient, or facility where a patient lives, to ask if they need any additional supplies before we head into the weekend. Then take note of which person needs what supplies and let the nurse or aide know to bring these supplies at their next visit.

At Ashland Aging, we believe staying healthy is about more than doctor visits—it’s about connection, learning, and joy. We offer a variety of evidence-based workshops and programs designed to help older adults and caregivers live vibrant, independent lives.

When LeAnn attended her first healthy aging workshop, she was nervous. Living alone after her husband’s passing, she’d stopped going out much. But after meeting Carrie, a volunteer leader who taught a “Living Well with Chronic Conditions” class, she began to smile again. Her warmth and encouragement reminded her that she still had goals to reach—and friends to make. Now, LeAnn never misses a session, and she’s even thinking about becoming a volunteer leader herself.

Stories like LeAnn's are why we do what we do—and why we need caring, motivated people like you.

Our program leaders are volunteers who bring passion, experience, and heart to every class. If you have a background in working with older adults, caregivers, or individuals managing chronic health conditions, or if you're new to working with seniors, we’d love to have you join our team. All leaders complete virtual training through the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging, and we cover all training and supply costs.

While a background check is required, the true reward is priceless—seeing a senior’s confidence grow, hearing their laughter return, and knowing you’ve made a lasting difference.

Join us in our mission to help seniors in our community remain healthy and vibrant.

Call today at 715-682-4414 ext. 4 to learn more.

Volunteer: Meals on Wheels (MOW) Drivers

Deliver More Than a Meal – Deliver Peace of Mind

Every weekday, Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers travel the roads of Ashland County—through Ashland, Sanborn, Mellen, Glidden, and Butternut—bringing hot and cold meals to seniors who are homebound. But the delivery is about so much more than food.

Take Jim, for example—a volunteer who delivers in Ashland. Every Wednesday, he knocks on Mrs. Anderson’s door with her favorite chicken dinner and a big smile. She always greets him with a story from her younger days, and before he leaves, she gives him a cookie and thanks him “for bringing more than just lunch—you make my day brighter.” For Mrs. Anderson, that visit reminds her she’s not alone. For Jim, it’s the best part of his week.

Meals on Wheels drivers are the lifeline and vital part of the team.

Meals on Wheels drivers not only ensure meals are delivered safely and on time—they also provide a friendly check-in that offers comfort to seniors and reassurance to their families. Knowing someone caring is stopping by each day brings tremendous peace of mind to loved ones.

Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles and donate their time, but the reward is priceless: the smiles, the gratitude, and the knowledge that you’ve made someone’s day a little brighter.

If you’d like to deliver more than a meal—deliver kindness and connection—join us in our mission and call today for more information at 715-682-4414 ext. 0.

Volunteer: Volunteer Medical Drivers

Become a Volunteer Driver — Every Ride Has a Story!

When Mary lost her husband, she also lost her only ride to her doctor’s appointments. That is, until Tom volunteered to drive her. Now, every other Tuesday morning, they chat about family, gardening, and the latest local news on the way to her cancer treatments. For Mary, it’s more than transportation—it’s friendship and independence. For Tom, it’s the best part of his week.

Our Volunteer Driver Program depends on caring individuals like Tom. Volunteer drivers provide non-emergency rides for seniors and adults with disabilities—helping them get to medical appointments and back home safely. Each trip helps someone stay healthy, connected, and independent.

Each ride is more than just a trip; it’s a lifeline that helps clients stay connected to their doctors, their community, and their independence.

Volunteers choose how often they drive—once a week, once a month, or on call—and assignments are typically just part of a day (morning or afternoon). We work with your schedule and offer a mileage stipend. Some trips are shorter in Ashland County, others are longer - to Duluth or Ironwood.

Volunteer drivers use their own reliable vehicle and must maintain a valid driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance on file with our agency. If you have a reliable car and a few hours to spare, you can make a real difference—one ride, one smile, one story at a time.

Join our cause, be that difference, and make a new connection. Call us today for more information - 715-682-4414 ext 0.

Volunteer: PetSmart Cat Care Volunteer

You can help the HSJC cats and kittens at our satellite cattery get the care and love they need.
Cattery care volunteers at Madison's PetSmart West location are needed for about 2 hours daily anytime between 7:00am-11:00am to help with feeding, cleaning, socializing, and preparing kitties ready to meet potential adopters.

Another need is in the evenings anytime between 5:00-8:30pm, helping wrap up the day feeding dinner, cleaning out cages, and making sure the room is as clean as possible to keep the kitties healthy and ready to be adopted.

Because of the time and cost required to train volunteers, HSJC requires a commitment to volunteering. Volunteer are asked to commit to a minimum of one scheduled, recurring shift at least twice per month. Shifts vary in length depending on the number of animals.

Volunteers must be able to read and comprehend policy and protocol information and remember and follow shelter rules.

Human interaction is a requirement of all volunteer roles. Volunteers are an extension of the HSJC and must always communicate professionally, although this is an independent role and you will usually be working solo.

Volunteer: Office Support/Administrative Volunteers

At Heartland, we consider the chance to be involved in the lives of our patients and families both a sacred opportunity and a privilege. The love, respect and care our hospice volunteers provide is vitally important to our patients' overall well-being during challenging times.

Hospice volunteers say that being intimately involved with another person's death gives them a greater appreciation for life. Some say it makes them more grateful and less susceptible to getting ruffled over life's smaller hassles such as long lines and traffic jams [source: Hospice Volunteer Association].

Our Administrative Volunteers assist in ensuring our Care Teams are prepared and ready to attend a death, visit a grieving family member, honor veterans, train a new staff member, or admit a new patient to our services. Our Social Workers, Nurses, Physicians, CNAs, Spiritual Care Coordinators, Music Therapists, Art Therapists, Dietitians, Physical Therapists, and Bereavement Teams need the office support to be in the field and accomplish their tasks. From assembling admission binders, to transferring files, to running data pulls, to making phone calls, to labeling pamphlets, to scanning files: we will accommodate your skill sets to find the perfect fit for you.

We need your help!

If office support is your specialty, please consider joining our team!

Volunteer: Phone Pal

A phone pal is like a pen pal but instead of writing letters, it's over the phone!

Volunteer: Reading & Math Volunteers

We are looking for Volunteers that can help us work with the children in our program on reading, writing and math.  We are part of "Math Hoops", an NBA Math program under the Milwaukee Bucks division.  There is volunteer online training for Math Hoops.  VOLUNTEERS may also need to help work with children on basic math skills, tutor them 1 v 1 or possibly check in with their teachers regarding academic status.

Most of the kids in our program, but not all, live on or below the poverty line.  We use basketball to keep them on track academically, involve them in Community events that build character, and the children have fun through basketball training and a competitive level of basketball game play.  Our program starts where other community programs end, providing doors of opportunity for the future of these children.

You do not have to have been a teacher to volunteer, patience and caring are enough.  However, we would welcome any retired teacher or anyone with a teaching background that could help us.

The home life of some of these children is very difficult.  Your help and caring would be appreciated.

A Veteran volunteer is a person who has served or is currently serving in the military, visiting a Veteran on Hospice. Vet to Vet builds comradery that nonmilitary members can't relate to. As a Veteran, you will have first priority when we have a veteran looking for a companion volunteer. Great for veterans, ROTC, active duty, military family members etc.

Duties (any one activity will be very helpful): -Assisting in special events -Look for new opportunities.

Qualifications: -Positive attitude, organized, and possess a desire to honor our nation's veterans, and a desire to work in a hospice setting with the elderly, and a wide range of individuals.

Here is a link for a video created by Interim with one of our Veteran patients. This video really captivates what a volunteer can do and glimpse into what being a Interim Volunteer looks like.  Making Memories at Every Stage in Life: One Veteran's Hospice Story (youtube.com)

Are you looking for ways to put your handyman talents and tools to work?  We'd love it if you shared these with Covey.  We often have the need to complete small maintenance/home repair tasks--anything from hanging a curtain rod, to installing a smoke detector, to fixing that dripping faucet.  We'd welcome some help for an hour or two every month and can be very flexible about when that hour or two takes place.

Imagine moving from a shelter or a temporary emergency living situation to a new apartment or home.  Needs would include cleaning products and tools to help maintain the space.  A box of these types of products would be a wonderful way to welcome a family to their new home and make it easier to keep the space clean and tidy. Each kit should contain: Sponges (high-quality ones with an abrasive side) Dishwashing brush, bottle brush, & dish soap Kitchen towel Dishcloth All-purpose spray cleaner Tub of disinfectant wipes Toilet brush and toilet cleaner Dusting cloths  If funds permit, additional brooms, dustpans, and vacuum cleaners are welcomed donations. If you are interested in doing a DIY Volunteer Project with your group, please follow these simple steps:

STEP 1: Call United Way before starting your DIY Project so that we have can discuss greatest needs in the community and your timeline. We also need a little lead time to touch base with partner programs to make sure your kits go where they are most needed and to ensure our partners have the time to prepare to receive them.

Contact: info@marshfieldareaunitedway.org or call 715-507-5005

STEP 2: Make a plan of action plan for your group to gather/buy/solicit materials and assemble the kits. Your plan should include the following:

Purchase the suggested items OR host a drive or fundraiser to purchase items.

Assemble the kits. All kits should have most of the above items or additional items.

Include a homemade card or drawing. Sign it "From a family who cares."

Have fun with this and celebrate your time working together to help others in our community!

STEP 3: When kits are ready, contact the United Way once more for final assistance in coordinating where they should be dropped. Whenever possible, we will have groups drop their kits directly at the local agencies that will distribute them, but the final drop location will depend upon storage capacities at our partner agencies.

Volunteer: DIY: Birthday Cake Box

Do you want to prepare birthday cake boxes for those in need?
WHAT DO I NEED TO MAKE A BIRTHDAY CAKE BOX?
9×13 disposable aluminum foil pan – The ones with the lids work great because you can package it all up neatly! 1 box of cake mix - any flavor 1 can of frosting 1 can of Sprite or other lemon-lime soda (store brand will work). Soda is used in case the recipient doesn’t have eggs or oil.  Include a note to simply combine the cake mix with the can of soda and bake according to the box directions. Birthday candles Of course, you can add more things if you would like. Great additions include birthday tablecloths from the dollar store, sprinkles, colored frosting tubes, streamers, birthday plates, etc.  WHY DO I ADD A CAN OF LEMON LIME SODA? Did you know that you can make a delicious cake out of nothing but a box of cake mix and a can of lemon-lime soda? Well, you do now! Not everyone has eggs and/or oil on hand. Imagine how disappointed you’d be if you got a birthday cake box but didn’t have the other ingredients to make it.    If you are interested in doing a DIY Volunteer Project with your group, please follow these simple steps:

Longer recordings can be translated and recorded in real-time with an English speaker over a Zoom call (PowerPoint sent in advance), or screen-recorded separately on the volunteer’s own digital device. Catholic Charities trains you to record videos within your own home or at one of Charities’ offices to record. If needed, Catholic Charities’ Community Educator will join you via Zoom to record the first video(s) together. Catholic Charities edits and posts the recordings to YouTube and TikTok.
