Opportunities From: Volunteer Wisconsin

Volunteer: Senior Medicare Patrol Volunteer

SMP volunteers are concerned citizens (often retired professionals) who empower seniors to prevent healthcare fraud through outreach and education. SMP volunteers make presentations to groups and/or distribute materials at community events to educate Medicare beneficiaries, caregivers, and professionals how to prevent, detect, and report healthcare fraud.

Most volunteers commit between 2-5 hours each month to the SMP program. Generally, volunteer duties fall into one of the following two categories: speaking to Medicare beneficiaries about fraud OR working an SMP table (answering questions about SMP, disseminating brochures about Medicare fraud) at a senior-related health fair. Additionally, some SMP volunteers help write press releases, help with office administration, and assist other SMP volunteers in scheduling their presentations.

All SMP volunteers must complete the SMP Foundations Training before beginning to volunteer with the project. Additionally, supplementary training is available to SMP volunteers on an on-going basis.

CAP Early Childhood Development

Our Head Start classes and families do have a few needs:

Examples of allowable donations

Classroom supplies New classroom learning materials and toys (age appropriate) New or gently used books Paper supplies (copying paper, paper for classroom projects) Office supplies Paper goods (toilet paper, paper towels) Diapers (used for the program)

Examples of donations that would benefit families

Personal hygiene products (soap, shampoo etc.) Cleaning supplies Laundry supplies Diapers to send home Winter coats/boots

Another on-going need is for gas cards.  We would want to make sure that these can only be used for purchasing gas and ‘not’ other items at the gas station.  We often ask parents to volunteer and come to parent events however often they cannot come due to a "no gas" issue.

Volunteer: Seeking Mentors!

We are looking for caring, responsible individuals to become defenders of youth potential by volunteering to be mentors with our organization!

This one-on-one mentoring opportunity is intended to make a substantial, positive impact on a child's life for the better, forever. **Please note: The children that we serve are typically at-risk and come from low-income and single-parent households. We ask for a minimum 12-month commitment and that you connect with your Little two to four times monthly. We have found that mentoring relationships are more beneficial to the child when their mentor is consistent, caring, and stands by their Little for over a year.

Ever wonder about becoming a Big or Big Couple? It's easier than you think to change a life: connect a couple of times a month to share life experiences and have FUN! Go swimming, take a hike, throw a football, ride bikes, go to a movie or baseball game, or challenge your Little in your favorite video game. The possibilities are endless, and once you begin, our professional program staff is always here to support you with consistent communication, coaching, and resources, and hosting fun, free activities for you and your Little can just show up and enjoy! It Takes Little to Be Big!

Opportunities are available throughout our service area in Southeast Minnesota and Southwest Wisconsin. If you're interested or just have a few questions before you commit, let us know. We're here to help and we're here to change lives for the better, forever!

Volunteer: Sewers Needed for Memory Bears

Memory Bears are beautiful, handmade stuffed animals constructed from the personal clothing of hospice patients served by Ministry Home Care-Hospice Services. The keepsakes are designed to bring the surviving family members closer to the memory of their loved one. Each bear is created by a volunteer(s) with the individual in mind, using the clothing the patient or family has selected as special to them.  The bears serve as a lasting comfort to those who have lost their loved ones.

Additional volunteer sewers are needed in the Marshfield area and throughout Clark County.  Sewers should be skilled as they often work independently.  This volunteer opportunity allows each sewer to use their skill and creativity to construct each unique memory bear.  Sewers will be able to schedule their sewing time to fit their busy days, as well as doing work in their own home.  New volunteers will use the provided pattern to make a bear and help and advice are available for the volunteers.  Anyone with an interest in joining this effort is asked to call Deborah Hickey (Marshfield) at 800-397-4216.

Volunteer: Legal Guardian

Your commitment can make a world of difference to someone who lacks the support they deserve! Often a family member or friend will take on guardianship, however, some people do not have relatives or friends available, willing, or able to take on these responsibilities and those people need your help. Outagamie County Volunteer Services recruits community members who are willing to take on these responsibilities and match them with a person in need. Instead of people being seen as a client of a company, they are seen as a person who has someone who cares. Guardians may be in charge of the person or estate or both and will be matched based on the volunteer's preference. You will make decisions regarding the person's well-being, health, and financial interests. Guardians are court appointed so this is a long term commitment. Mileage reimbursement is available at the federal rate and the work can be completed around your schedule. Once you are matched with an individual in need you can start making a tangible impact in their life. For more information, please email hhsvolunteers@outagamie.org. Visit our website: Guardianship.
