Opportunities From: Volunteer Wisconsin

Volunteer: Food Sorting to Solve Hunger

Thank you for your interest in helping us to solve hunger! We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities at our Milwaukee food bank. We welcome individuals, families, corporate and social groups.

Volunteers participate in sorting, packaging, labeling, and cleaning projects. This could range from labeling canned goods to be shipped to food pantries, sorting meat products to provide meal programs with real protein, boxing fresh produce to send to homeless shelters, or packing bulk product into family friendly sized portions. Our staff will give you specific information about your task and assist you through your shift. Please note this volunteer activity takes place in a warehouse facility. For safety concerns, volunteers who are 10-13 years old must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the volunteer activity.

Surfaces, equipment and tools are sanitized after each volunteer shift. We may ask our volunteers to assist us with the process.

Volunteer Requirements & Information

Must be able to stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds. Must wear closed-toe shoes. Volunteers must be at least 10 years old. Youth, ages 10-13, must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. Groups of school-age youth (schools, clubs, churches, etc.) require one adult chaperone for every 7-10 volunteers. All volunteers under 18 must have a parent or guardian initial and sign their liability waivers.

Due to the nature of working with mostly donated foods, volunteer projects are not always guaranteed to come in on time or at all. Volunteer shifts may need to be shortened or rescheduled if projects are completed or unavailable. We will make every effort to provide a two-week notice if volunteer shifts will need to be rescheduled.

Please register to participate through the volunteer portal on the Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin website: https://feedingamericawi.org/get-involved/volunteer/in-milwaukee/.

Volunteer Sessions

Monday - Friday: 9:00 am - 11:30 am, 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm

Volunteer: Volunteer Guardian Program

Volunteer Guardians Needed!

A legal guardian is a decision maker and an advocate for those who are incompetent due to aging, a developmental disability, chronic mental illness or alcohol and drug abuse (i.e. ward). Guardians ensure that the individual’s rights to proper housing, nutrition, and medical care are met. A guardian is expected to visit their ward at least once a month and complete an annual report. A legal guardian does not financially support the ward, take care of the ward on a day to day basis, nor personally provide a place for the ward to live. Time commitment is based on the needs of the ward.

Volunteers receive training and support from the Brown County Adult Protective Services Unit. A stipend of $15.00 per ward-per month, mileage, and reimbursement for expenses such as copying legal paperwork, postage is available upon request.

For more information, contact: Jenna Durkee at (920) 448-6023 or Jenna.Durkee@browncountywi.gov

Volunteer: Parent Pals Program

Support a Parent

Volunteer mentors spend time (2-3 times per month) with parents referred by Brown County Child Protective Services who have identified an interest in having an informal support in their lives. Mentors often spend time helping parents with minor children enhance skills that empower the family by developing household routines, budgeting money, planning meals and shopping for necessary items, connecting them with other community resources, or simply supporting the parent. Matches are based on compatibility and can continue for as long as both parties are interested though the hope would be to have volunteers engaged with their Parent Pal for a minimum of 18 months.

Orientation and training are provided. Mileage reimbursement is available.

Volunteer: Share your therapy dog's unconditional love with hospice patients! (Oak Creek)

Volunteers are the HEART of Heartland Hospice! We are looking for more therapy dog/handler teams in Oak Creek, or a surrounding community, to enrich the lives of our hospice patients. The pet visitor volunteer, along with their certified therapy dog, can encourage an emotional connection, alleviate stress and feelings of isolation, promote self-esteem and provide meaningful interactions/activities to support life review and the sharing of memories. Volunteers and their furry friends have the power to bring the greatest gifts to our patients’ lives... a smile and reassurance during what often can be a very difficult and sensitive time.

If you have a friendly canine who has a lot of love to give and spreads joy wherever she/he goes, this is the opportunity for you! Contact Volunteer Coordinator Gypsi at 414-944-2000 or cheryl.kernats@heartlandhospice.com for more info!

PLEASE NOTE: FOR THIS VOLUNTEER ROLE, CANINE MUST BE CURRENTLY CERTIFIED AS A THERAPY ANIMAL. There are many organizations that provide the therapy animal certification, including Alliance of Therapy Dogs (www.therapydogs.com) and Therapy Dogs International (http://www.tdi-dog.org/). Volunteer: Veterans Serving Veterans: Volunteer in Hospice! (Oak Creek)

As a proud participant of the We Honor Veterans program, veteran or current military members will have the unique ability to support Heartland Hospice veteran patients through the "vets-for-vets" volunteer opportunity. Heartland Hospice volunteers help to support and enhance the quality of life of those they visit. Vets-for-vets volunteers offer services such as: companionship by just being present for the patient and offering to talk or assisting with non-medical tasks; emotional support through active listening, sharing experiences and stories; allowing for expression of feelings; holding a hand; giving a needed hug; offering words of comfort; and respite support by staying with the patient while the caregiver enjoys a moment alone to run errands, make appointments, or simply take time to care for themselves.

We recognize that veterans share a special bond among each other. The goal of our vets-for-vets volunteer opportunity is to match veteran patients with a hospice-trained veteran who may have a similar background. All patient visitor volunteers receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, as well as, helpful skills in caring for and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Volunteer hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability and location.

Interested applicants will: be at least 18-years-old, complete initial application paperwork, agree to a background and reference check, attend a volunteer orientation and complete a TB test.

Contact Volunteer Coordinator Gypsi at cheryl.kernats@heartlandhospice.com or 414-944-2000 to learn more about this rewarding volunteer opportunity!

Volunteer: Veterans Serving Veterans: Volunteer in Hospice! (Waukesha)

Volunteers are required to wear a face mask while indoors at a GSWISE property or when they are within 6 feet of others on the property.  Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own face masks but if they do not have one, a mask will be provided for them.  We have hand sanitizer and cleaning products available in each facility, which are cleaned and disinfected daily.  All GSWISE staff members will be wearing masks when working with girls and volunteers. Volunteer: Weekends- 1:1/small grp activities with older adults!

Looking for reliable volunteers on the weekends at Mulder Health Care Facility who like working with older adults.

Volunteers will be coming independently (without rec therapy staff there to lead) once comfortable after a short orientation and can do 1 on 1 visits or small group activities appropriate for our residents. Keep in mind, many of our residents have dementia or Alzheimer's so games usually have to be simple or modified.  Examples of things to do with our residents:  visiting, crafts, being read to, puzzles/crosswords, reminisce, anything musical, etc. Recreation Therapy can also set you up with materials if needed.

When: any time throughout the weekend. For our residents, typically the best time is in between meals in the late morning (between 9:30-11:30), afternoons, or early evening.

Mulder Health Care Facility requires all volunteers to have a short orientation, a recent TB test (can be done at our facility for no charge), and a background check. Since we require these things to be done, we prefer our volunteers to at least have a time commitment of around 3 months or equivalent in the frequency of your hours to make it worth your time and ours.  Come have fun with the elderly! Every day is a new adventure! :)

Volunteer: Mathematics/Science Classroom Assistant

9th and 10th grade math & science students at East High School are involved in small-group investigations on an almost daily basis. Staff and volunteer assistants in the classroom are instrumental in helping students to focus their inquiries and to discover general principles of beginning algebra, geometry, introductory biology, and general chemistry. Volunteers ask leading questions and help students to clarify their thoughts, rather than teach new material. One-to-one tutoring/mentoring opportunities also become available from time to time.

RESTRICTIONS: Volunteers must authorize the school district to perform a basic background check. Training is available "on-the-job" from the classroom teacher, with additional resources, such as texts and videotapes available upon request.

Volunteer: Help Write About Actual or Wanted Transit in the Madison Area

Writing about transit contributes to the democratic process by informing our electorate if what a 1-to-5 investment can do for the public good. Maybe you ride the bus. Maybe you do not. You can explain why, why not or something else. Do you walk, bike and/or drive a car? Why or why not? You can write about actual or anticipated experiences. Does weather matter? Does time of year matter? What would be ideal? Why?

You could write a nonproprietary column or blog for our website (www.busadvocates.org/blog.html). Accompanying text with a picture can be an additional plus. You can also pitch an opinion or article somewhere else. Letters to the Editor, columns, blogs and articles are all important. Write your own composition or help draft one with others. Get the word out.

Your work could help fulfill a classroom assignment or a requirement for community service.

Volunteer: Grassroots photography

Pictures are a good way to tell people about transit.  By themselves or in conjunction with text that discusses a transit situation in more depth. You might want to show one or another feature of a transit vehicle -- taxi, rental bike, accessible van, regular 40' bus or or a bigger accordian bus.  You might want to show a Bus Rapid Transit station, an electric re-charging device, a new fare meter, bike parking, the 'before and after' of shelter removal from a regular bus stop, traffic on a street with a red bus-only lane, an electronic announcement board, new and old methods of wheelchair securement, people boarding a bus through different doors. or something else.

Consider brief videos in addition to stills. We attribute the photographer when posting a photograph on our website.

Your contribution could help fulfill a course or community service requirement.

Volunteer: Become a Wish Granter in your area!

Wish Granters act as liaisons between wish children and the Make-A-Wish® office. A wish granter meets with the wish child and his or her family to plan their one special wish.

As a Wish Granter you will aid the Mission Delivery staff in meeting with wish families, collecting detailed information about the child's wish and family information, planning the wish presentation day and more. It takes a special volunteer to become a Wish Granter, so training is involved. Additionally, we do screen all applicants for this position.

Being a Wish Granter is a very rewarding and sometimes humbling experience. We are in need of wish granters in your county of Wisconsin. Wish Granters work with the local wish kids in the area they reside. If you are interested in this opportunity or have any questions please email jparulski@wisconsin.wish.org
