Volunteer: Veterans Serving Veterans: Volunteer in Hospice! (Waukesha)

As a proud participant of the We Honor Veterans program, veteran or current military members will have the unique ability to support Heartland Hospice veteran patients through the "vets-for-vets" volunteer opportunity. Heartland Hospice volunteers help to support and enhance the quality of life of those they visit. Vets-for-vets volunteers offer services such as: companionship by just being present for the patient and offering to talk or assisting with non-medical tasks; emotional support through active listening, sharing experiences and stories; allowing for expression of feelings; holding a hand; giving a needed hug; offering words of comfort; and respite support by staying with the patient while the caregiver enjoys a moment alone to run errands, make appointments, or simply take time to care for themselves.

We recognize that veterans share a special bond among each other. The goal of our vets-for-vets volunteer opportunity is to match veteran patients with a hospice-trained veteran who may have a similar background. All patient visitor volunteers receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, as well as, helpful skills in caring for and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Volunteer hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability and location.

Interested applicants will: be at least 18-years-old, complete initial application paperwork, agree to a background and reference check, attend a volunteer orientation and complete a TB test.

Contact Volunteer Coordinator Gypsi at cheryl.kernats@heartlandhospice.com or 414-944-2000 to learn more about this rewarding volunteer opportunity!

Handlers will also need to attend a Heartland Hospice volunteer orientation; complete application paperwork, including background and reference checks; and get a TB test.

Volunteer: Support hospice patients and families in their greatest hour of need: become a vigil volunteer! (West Allis)

Heartland Hospice

The vigil volunteer program is designed to keep vigil with patients and families during the dying process. A hospice vigil volunteer is one of Heartland's most special and fulfilling opportunities. Support may involve prayer (reading from the Bible or other material that is comforting for patient), providing respite to family (allowing them to step away and grab a bite to eat/take a break) or simply being present...providing comfort and peace of mind to all that the patient is not alone. Vigil volunteers, in collaboration with the hospice team, can help provide the patient with the most valuable gift - a loving presence.

Our vigil volunteer program is more of an "on-call" opportunity; vigil support is based upon request of patient's family or care-giving team. Scheduling of vigil takes into consideration the volunteer's location and availability.

Applicants must attend an orientation to learn about the philosophy of hospice, the role of a vigil volunteer, and skills related to caring for and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Emphasis is on providing comfort during the dying process. Requirements for vigil volunteers: 18 years of age or older, complete a TB test, must agree to background and reference check, must be appropriately coping with any personal losses, impeccable communication skills, sound judgment regarding issues of death and dying, and ability to work independently with indirect supervision. Characteristics that Heartland is looking for in a vigil volunteer include: a positive outlook on life, flexibility, empathy, sensitivity to issues around death and dying, compassion, a willingness to help others and ability to work as a member of the hospice team. Reliable transportation is a must!

If you live in West Allis, or a surrounding community, and would like to provide support to hospice patients during their greatest hour of need, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Gypsi at 414-944-2000; cheryl.kernats@heartlandhospice.com. We're waiting to hear from you!

Volunteer: Healing Rocks

A healing rock is used to provide an inspirational message to a client who is on their healing journey but may need a little reminder one day. Take for example, Heidi, she is a 24 year old young professional in her first job out of college. She was sexually assaulted at a party in college and has flashbacks, re-occurring thoughts, and nightmares of the assault. Upon entering into services at The Healing Center Heidi has begun to work on techniques to cope through difficult days and one of those techniques is something called, grounding. Heidi keeps a rock in her desk drawer at work with the word: Courage. She pulls it out when she is having a flashback to the assault and describes the texture, color, feel, weight, and letters on the rock. The rock helps Heidi to remember that she is courageous and bring her back from the flashback.

Volunteers can help by creating healing rocks for our clients. Each rock will serve a different healing purpose for each client.

We ask that interested volunteers be able to provide the supplies needed to decorate healing rocks, as we cannot always guarantee having any on hand.

Volunteer: Food Sorting to Solve Hunger

Thank you for your interest in helping us to solve hunger! We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities at our Milwaukee food bank. We welcome individuals, families, corporate and social groups.

Volunteers participate in sorting, packaging, labeling, and cleaning projects. This could range from labeling canned goods to be shipped to food pantries, sorting meat products to provide meal programs with real protein, boxing fresh produce to send to homeless shelters, or packing bulk product into family friendly sized portions. Our staff will give you specific information about your task and assist you through your shift. Please note this volunteer activity takes place in a warehouse facility. For safety concerns, volunteers who are 10-13 years old must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the volunteer activity.

Surfaces, equipment and tools are sanitized after each volunteer shift. We may ask our volunteers to assist us with the process.

Volunteer Requirements & Information

Must be able to stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds. Must wear closed-toe shoes. Volunteers must be at least 10 years old. Youth, ages 10-13, must be accompanied by their parent or guardian. Groups of school-age youth (schools, clubs, churches, etc.) require one adult chaperone for every 7-10 volunteers. All volunteers under 18 must have a parent or guardian initial and sign their liability waivers.

Due to the nature of working with mostly donated foods, volunteer projects are not always guaranteed to come in on time or at all. Volunteer shifts may need to be shortened or rescheduled if projects are completed or unavailable. We will make every effort to provide a two-week notice if volunteer shifts will need to be rescheduled.

Please register to participate through the volunteer portal on the Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin website: https://feedingamericawi.org/get-involved/volunteer/in-milwaukee/.

Volunteer Sessions

Monday - Friday: 9:00 am - 11:30 am, 1:00 pm - 3:30 pm

If you have any questions, please reach out to Adam Koebel, Volunteer Engagement Coordinator. Email or call Adam at akoebel@feedingamericawi.org or 414-831-6326.

Volunteer: Volunteer Guardian Program

Volunteer Guardians Needed!

A legal guardian is a decision maker and an advocate for those who are incompetent due to aging, a developmental disability, chronic mental illness or alcohol and drug abuse (i.e. ward). Guardians ensure that the individual’s rights to proper housing, nutrition, and medical care are met. A guardian is expected to visit their ward at least once a month and complete an annual report. A legal guardian does not financially support the ward, take care of the ward on a day to day basis, nor personally provide a place for the ward to live. Time commitment is based on the needs of the ward.

Volunteers receive training and support from the Brown County Adult Protective Services Unit. A stipend of $15.00 per ward-per month, mileage, and reimbursement for expenses such as copying legal paperwork, postage is available upon request.

For more information, contact: Jenna Durkee at (920) 448-6023 or Jenna.Durkee@browncountywi.gov
