Volunteer: Senior Medicare Patrol - Help Educate Medicare Beneficiaries in WI

The SMP program offers volunteers an opportunity to make an important difference in their communities throughout Wisconsin.

Thank you for your interest in the Senior Medicare Patrol volunteer program. As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in the overall success of the Wisconsin SMP. The information that you will impart as a volunteer will help seniors in your community to become better health care consumers. Together we can inform and empower Medicare beneficiaries, their families and caregivers on how to protect, detect, and report Medicare fraud, abuses and errors. By volunteering, you will have an opportunity to use your talents, skills, and networking to provide outreach and education on Medicare fraud in your community. Volunteer involvement ranges from distributing materials, staffing a booth at conferences and outreach events, to giving group presentations. A description of these three activities is below.

Information distributor: As a distributor, you help to transport and distribute SMP information materials to various sites, kiosks, or senior centers throughout your community where information resources are made available to residences. In this role, you do not need to engage in discussions with others about personal information or situations. However, you simply note all questions or comments and give them to the Volunteer Coordinator for follow-up. Exhibitor: As an exhibitor, you help to staff an informational table or booth at community events such as senior resources fairs, wellness expos, health workshops, conferences, civic or faith-based organizations, food pantries, libraries, or non-profit agencies. In this role, you provide information about the program to the attendees and answer basic questions related to how to prevent, detect and report Medicare fraud, abuse and errors. Presenter: As a presenter, you give presentations about the fundamentals of SMP to small and large groups. The role includes the opportunity for you to interact with the audience. If time allows, additional interaction will occur through Q & A and discussion at the end of the presentation. The presentations vary in length from 15 to 60 minutes. Depending on the time allotment and the audience, the presentations may involve a PowerPoint presentation, or an engagement activity called The FUNdamentals of Patrolling Health Care.

All positions require some training and an orientation. Training is provided both in-person and online. We want to provide you with the information and background you’ll need to be knowledgeable and capable of responding to questions from members of the community. The last two roles also require a background check.

Benefits of servings as an SMP Volunteer

The SMP program offers volunteers an opportunity to make an important difference in their communities. Volunteers take pride in working to ensure that the Medicare program will be protected for future generations. Time Commitment

SMP Volunteers have flexibility in the time devoted to the program. While there is no obligation for a specific monthly time commitment, it is asked that volunteers commit to at least a year due to the amount of training required.

Reporting

Volunteers report directly to the SMP Volunteer Coordinator and submit monthly time sheets and mileage reports.

Qualifications

Commitment to the SMP mission and values Willingness and ability to learn about Medicare and SMP related issues Impartiality when working with people of diverse backgrounds Willingness and means to travel to SMP events and presentations

Once paired, veteran volunteers have the unique ability to relate and connect with the patient creating an environment where life review and healing may occur. Many Veterans receiving SSM Health at Home– Hospice services wish to be connected with a volunteer who is also a veteran. This program makes that possible.

As a hospice veteran volunteer, you can provide support and comfort by offering a few hours of your time, companionship, and camaraderie. Volunteering times are flexible. Free, comprehensive training is provided, and no medical experience is necessary. All volunteers must maintain volunteer requirements and attend annual trainings. They will also provide direct support to the youth they case manage by giving homework assistance, talking with the parents of those youth, or sending updates home about progress being made. Members will build a “portfolio” for each youth, tracking success. The member will also coordinate and complete the youth’s enrollment into a database and conduct parent and teacher surveys throughout the year.

Volunteer: Support hospice patients and families in their greatest hour of need: become a vigil volunteer! (Milwaukee)

 Heartland Hospice

The vigil volunteer program is designed to keep vigil with patients and families during the dying process. A hospice vigil volunteer is one of Heartland's most special and fulfilling opportunities. Support may involve prayer (reading from the Bible or other material that is comforting for patient), providing respite to family (allowing them to step away and grab a bite to eat/take a break) or simply being present...providing comfort and peace of mind to all that the patient is not alone. Vigil volunteers, in collaboration with the hospice team, can help provide the patient with the most valuable gift - a loving presence.

Our vigil volunteer program is more of an "on-call" opportunity; vigil support is based upon request of patient's family or care-giving team. Scheduling of vigil takes into consideration the volunteer's location and availability.

Applicants must attend an orientation to learn about the philosophy of hospice, the role of a vigil volunteer, and skills related to caring for and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Emphasis is on providing comfort during the dying process. Requirements for vigil volunteers: 18 years of age or older, complete a TB test, must agree to background and reference check, must be appropriately coping with any personal losses, impeccable communication skills, sound judgment regarding issues of death and dying, and ability to work independently with indirect supervision. Characteristics that Heartland is looking for in a vigil volunteer include: a positive outlook on life, flexibility, empathy, sensitivity to issues around death and dying, compassion, a willingness to help others and ability to work as a member of the hospice team. Reliable transportation is a must!

If you live in Milwaukee, or a surrounding community, and would like to provide support to hospice patients during their greatest hour of need, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Gypsi at 414-944-2000; cheryl.kernats@heartlandhospice.com. We're waiting to hear from you!

Volunteers are the HEART of Heartland Hospice! We are looking for more therapy dog/handler teams in Milwaukee, or a surrounding community, to enrich the lives of our hospice patients. The pet visitor volunteer, along with their certified therapy dog, can encourage an emotional connection, alleviate stress and feelings of isolation, promote self-esteem and provide meaningful interactions/activities to support life review and the sharing of memories. Service hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability and location. Volunteers and their furry friends have the power to bring the greatest gifts to our patients’ lives... a smile and reassurance during what often can be a very difficult and sensitive time.

Volunteer: Veterans Serving Veterans: Volunteer in Hospice! (Milwaukee)

As a proud participant of the We Honor Veterans program, veteran or current military members will have the unique ability to support Heartland Hospice veteran patients through the "vets-for-vets" volunteer opportunity. Heartland Hospice volunteers help to support and enhance the quality of life of those they visit. Vets-for-vets volunteers offer services such as: companionship by just being present for the patient and offering to talk or assisting with non-medical tasks; emotional support through active listening, sharing experiences and stories; allowing for expression of feelings; holding a hand; giving a needed hug; offering words of comfort; and respite support by staying with the patient while the caregiver enjoys a moment alone to run errands, make appointments, or simply take time to care for themselves.

We recognize that veterans share a special bond among each other. The goal of our vets-for-vets volunteer opportunity is to match veteran patients with a hospice-trained veteran who may have a similar background. All patient visitor volunteers receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, as well as, helpful skills in caring for and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Volunteer hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability and location.

Interested applicants will: be at least 18-years-old, complete initial application paperwork, agree to a background and reference check, attend a volunteer orientation and complete a TB test.

Contact Volunteer Coordinator Gypsi at cheryl.kernats@heartlandhospice.com or 414-944-2000 to learn more about this rewarding volunteer opportunity!

Volunteer: Beyond Coal to clean energy volunteer

We're getting off coal, but many utilities want to add new gas power plants, and we need to stop efforts to move to 'natural' gas. Especially with the potential growth of data centers, we're looking at a significant escalation in energy demand and continued reliance on fossil fuels. If that occurs, our clean energy goals will be in serious trouble.

In addition to ending the use of fossil fuels and moving to renewable energy and energy efficiency, we're also fighting for energy justice. Many people are burdened by unaffordable energy bills as utilities continue to jack up rates. We work with partners to push the Wisconsin Public Service Commission to stop permitting fossil fuels and provide affordable bills and programs to help people in need. You can help us end fossil fuel use and stop any new gas infrastructure by joining our Beyond Coal to Clean Energy team and moving to clean energy solutions and providing a just energy future.

We meet online the third Wednesday of each month at 6 pm. There are many opportunities including helping plan strategies and actions, developing social media, creating graphics, writing letters to the editor, and community outreach - and more, based on your skills or interests.

If you want to help create a clean and just energy future, this is a great opportunity to learn from and interact with trained staff and other volunteers. It's a fun way to connect with like-minded people who are working for a better and more sustainable future for our world. For more info, contact Don Ferber at d_ferber@sbcglobal.net.

Volunteer: Become a wish granter in your area!

Wish Granters act as liaisons between wish children and the Make-A-Wish® office. A wish granter meets with the wish child and his or her family to plan their one special wish.

As a Wish Granter you will aid the Mission Delivery staff in meeting with wish families, collecting detailed information about the child's wish and family information, planning the wish presentation day and more. It takes a special volunteer to become a Wish Granter, so training is involved. Additionally, we do screen all applicants for this position.

Being a Wish Granter is a very rewarding and sometimes humbling experience. We are in need of wish granters in your county of Wisconsin. Wish Granters work with the local wish kids in the area they reside. If you are interested in this opportunity or have any questions please email jparulski@wisconsin.wish.org
