Volunteer: 2,500 Items Needed! 2025 St. Joseph Academy Angel Shop DriveDo you sometimes receive little odds and ends that you don't want, can't use and usually throw into a closet to collect dust? Did you purchase something on clearance, but now it's sitting in a closet collecting dust? Are you or do you know a business who would be willing to donate their final clearance items to us? Or do you just have some new or gently used items you're clearing out of the house? Please consider donating those new or gently used items to us. In December 2025 we will hold our 5th Annual Angel Shop where Early Childhood & K4-8th students can shop for family members at $1-$5 a gift for that special someone in their lives. This allows them to be part of the process and spirit of giving. Students learn financial literacy skills, learn to independently shop, and they gain a true sense of pride and accomplishment from participating. We will be collecting items year round for children, teens, adult, and older adults (even Pets!). So please start putting those bags together with that candle you didn't want or hand soap you can't use or the extra screwdriver set you have lying around, that too small wallet, ties, men's cologne, women's perfume, the adult coloring book that was supposed to be calming, but just isn't, soccer and sports items, baseball hats, etc. Additionally, we are also accepting donations of wrapping paper, gift bags, tissue paper, scotch tape, gift tags and bows and ribbons. Donations are being accepted until Friday, December 5. Help us to make this an amazing experience for our kids. Please contact Kim Schubring, Director of Resource Development for drop-off instructions or for more information at (414) 645-5337 ext. 247 or email kschubring@sjamilwaukee.org. Want to volunteer to help kids shop during our Angel Shop? Contact Kim in November - December for more details. Volunteer: Building and grounds maintenance.MVM is looking for volunteers to help us in our mission to educate and preserve the history of our military veterans. The museum has several needs when it comes to maintenance of its buildings and grounds. Items include things like lawn mowing, brush clearing, weed pulling, flower watering, window washing and overall floor scrubbing/mopping of the motor pool area. The museum is also interested in professional volunteers like electricians and heating/cooling specialists, that would be willing to donate all or part of their time dealing with maintenance of parts of the building requiring a licensed professional. There are also parts of the original building construction that need a final coat of paint over the original primer. These needs would be great for groups. Volunteer: CashierMVM is looking for volunteers to help us in our mission to educate and preserve the history of our military veterans. Cashiers often are the first friendly face visitors see when they visit the museum. In addition to overseeing the PX/gift shop and checking out people’s purchases, they greet people as they enter the building, asking if they have visited the museum before and if they are a veteran. Visitors are asked to sign into the guest book. There currently is no admission fee to visit the museum, although people are told donations are greatly appreciated. Cashiers then give a brief description of the museum and ask the visitors if they would prefer a docent take them around or just go through on their own. The visitor is then handed off to the docent, or the docent is informed the visitor chooses to do a self-tour. As with the docents, the days cashiers are scheduled is open to the calendar of the volunteer, and a person can do either half or full day on the day they are scheduled. The expectation for a cashier is that they put in a minimum of eight hours per month. Volunteer: DocentThe Military Veterans Museum and Education center provides a unique experience for its visitors when they come through the door. Each visitor is offered a personalized tour by one of our docents no matter what time they arrive at the museum. In order to accomplish this, MVM needs a solid group of docents to be on site and ready to deliver the personalized tour. It is our hope you will consider to be a part of this group in helping educate the public about the history of our veterans. Docents at the Museum are central to museum operations on days when it is open, and they have several duties they perform as part of their job. These duties include unlocking the museum at the opening of business, turning on lights and audio-visual equipment, and checking that all is in order prior to our visitor’s arrival. At the close of business, they shut things down and lock up prior to leaving. As the name indicates, the main job of our docents at the museum is to teach. They are available to give a full or partial tour of the museum on request or are simply available to answer the questions of guests if they choose to do a self-tour. Currently the museum has no formal script for giving visitors tours. New docents learn as they go, following experienced docents as they give tours to visitors. Knowledge of military history and wars will be helpful for a person filling this position, but it is not required. Docents are also involved in handling group tours scheduled at the museum, to possibly include setting up and taking down chairs and tables. Volunteer: Newsletter writer/editor/layoutOur Sierra Club Four Lakes Group produces a newsletter 3 times a year, we have a blog on our web site that can be contributed to on an ongoing basis, and we do a monthly Enews. We'd welcome your joining us if you have skills or interests in writing, editing, graphics or social media to help communicate our environmental activities and issues. Our newsletter comes out in early January, May and September each year. We collaborate as a group, but are flexible on content, and include information on our campaigns, activities and volunteers. Access to a computer is required, but you can work from wherever with whatever software you have. We sometimes need to create information sheets or flyers about some of our campaign work or other activities, so there are intermittent opportunities to help with other communication. Contact Don Ferber at d_ferber@sbcglobal.net for more information.
