Volunteer: Children in our community need safe, caring homes -- Foster parents make that possible.

Children in our community need safe, caring homes — foster parents make that possible.

Right now in Dane County, children and teens are in need of temporary, supportive homes during times of family stress or change. Foster parents provide more than a place to stay—they offer stability, patience, and a sense of safety while families work toward reunification or other permanent plans.

Fostering is not about having all the answers. It’s about opening your home, offering consistency, and helping a child stay connected to their school, community, and relationships during a difficult time.

If you’ve ever wondered whether fostering could be part of your life, this is a place to learn more and take the next step.

Agency: Dane County Foster Care

Children in our community need safe, caring homes — foster parents make that possible.

Right now in Dane County, children and teens are in need of temporary, supportive homes during times of family stress or change. Foster parents provide more than a place to stay—they offer stability, patience, and a sense of safety while families work toward reunification or other permanent plans.

Fostering is not about having all the answers. It’s about opening your home, offering consistency, and helping a child stay connected to their school, community, and relationships during a difficult time.

If you’ve ever wondered whether fostering could be part of your life, this is a place to learn more and take the next step.

Volunteer: Be a Friend - Make a Difference Just By Being Yourself

Being a Friend is simple - and yet it is also life changing!

Did you know that About 1 in 4 adults with disabilities report that they do not get the social and emotional support they need? (Statistic via CDC)

YOU can make a difference just by being yourself! One Good Friend carefully matches adults with disabilities seeking a Friend to community members based on shared interests so that they are sure to have a fun and fulfilling time together!

Friends are encouraged to get together twice a month to hang out and do life together - simple things like going for walks, watching movies, crafting, playing sports, baking, etc.! Everyone in One Good Friend is invited to monthly inclusive group events that build our community and sense of belonging - events have included karaoke, bowling, movie-going, game nights, painting, pizza parties, nature walks, mini-golfing, and so much more!

By sharing only 2-4 hours a month with your Friend, you will make a difference! Friends are typically matched in 1-1 scenarios but have had families join together, and as pairs of volunteers - this is a good fit for anyone willing to be a Friend!

Hear from a recent volunteer: “A truer friend you’ll never find! Giving time to someone doesn’t cost anything. It will bring joy to you as well as filling another persons life with joy.” -K.T., volunteer Friend

What are Habitat Ambassadors (formerly known as the Speaker's Bureau)?

Habitat Ambassadors are storytellers, advocates, and friendly faces who bring Habitat’s mission to life. From speaking to civic groups and faith communities to attending community events and recruitment fairs, these volunteers help educate, inspire, and invite others to get involved.

We’re working to revive and grow this group with volunteers who enjoy connecting with people, sharing stories, and opening doors to new partnerships and opportunities. As this program grows, we’re excited to add new opportunities & events where Ambassadors will represent every part of our mission—construction, ReStore, homeownership, volunteering, and more.

Agency: Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity

Volunteer: Help a child learn to love reading - Read to Success/Black River Falls

Reading is the foundation of all learning.  You can help third-graders in Black River Falls' Red Creek Elementary School master this key skill, as a Read to Success tutor with The Great Rivers United Way!

Studies show if a child is not up to grade level reading by the end of third grade, they almost never catch up.

Read to Success runs throughout the majority of a school year, generally October - May. Over the course of the 2026-2027 school year, you will work with two or three students, spending 30-45 minutes with them each week during the school day.

You'll read to your student using a book we've selected that relates to a specific subject and have them read to you as well as participate in fun reading-based activities! To help you and your student feel comfortable and connected,  Great Rivers United Way provides a tutoring bin with literacy related conversation starter materials to help you focus your time together on reading skills.  Materials include question cards such as "what do you think will happen next?"  "Why do you think the character made that choice?"

In addition to helping your student improve their reading skills, your positive influence can have benefits that will last a lifetime.  The kids need the extra help and their teachers appreciate the extra support you can provide!

Schools require all volunteers have an approved background check on file to work with students.  The Great Rivers United Way Community Engagement Coordinator will contact you to explain more about the program and initiate the required background check.

So sign up today and help a child learn to love reading in your community!

Volunteer: Courthouse Navigator

About the MJC | AmeriCorps Program: The Milwaukee Justice Center’s Courthouse Navigator program, served by AmeriCorps Volunteers, is crucial in supporting the Milwaukee County community. Imagine yourself assisting individuals arriving at the courthouse who are overwhelmed by the legal process and unsure of where to turn for guidance. As a member of the Courthouse Navigator program, you would serve as the cornerstone of knowledge inside the courthouse walls. Whether someone needs directions to a specific courtroom or assistance navigating the complexities of their legal proceedings, you can make referrals and provide support - ensuring equal access to justice.

Your typical day as a Courthouse Navigators at the Milwaukee Justice Center (MJC) program can vary widely. You might find yourself serving at the information booths, fielding inquiries from individuals who are not sure what their next steps are, or assisting our clinics directly by working hands-on with clients to ensure they complete the filing process. The variety of tasks ensures that each day brings new challenges and opportunities to make a meaningful impact on the lives of community members.

Across the 2023-2024 program year, MJC | AmeriCorps assisted more than 24,000 individuals with various inquiries and navigated 690 MJC clients, increasing their confidence concerning filing processes by 86%.

Beyond these achievements, the program has extended its reach through collaborative initiatives to create a better community. This past Martin Luther King Jr. Day, on the heels of a subzero blizzard, MJC | AmeriCorps members partnered with City Year Milwaukee and braved the elements to paint and renovate the Lloyd Barbee Montessori School in alignment with AmeriCorps’ Day of National Service. The MJC | AmeriCorps team also proudly participated in the "September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance" by hosting a Diaper Drive, collecting 1,171 donated diapers and packing 5,019 additional diapers for the United Way Diaper Bank. These endeavors broaden the program's scope and reinforce its commitment to community engagement and service.

Volunteer: Donations Organizing - Care & Share Corner

Bluff Country Family Resources, located in Hokah, MN, is a nonprofit supporting individuals who have experienced domestic violence and sexual assault.

In our office, we have a space called the Care & Share Corner. This is an area that those we serve can shop freely for much needed items, such as clothing, dishes, and toiletries. Many items in this space are donated (especially clothing items).

We have a small team, as many nonprofits do, and could use help with sorting and organizing donated clothing items.
