Volunteer: Accessioning and Data entry of Museum Artifacts

MVM is looking for volunteers to help us in our mission to educate and preserve the history of our military veterans.

The museum currently has over sixteen thousand artifacts accessioned in its collection, ranging from small items like personal awards and ribbons on through the vehicles and a naval landing craft (Higgins Boat). The museum also receives many artifact donations from veterans and their families on a regular basis. The main goal of the museum at this point is to log the donation into our books and then catalog the donated artifacts into our computer database (a program called Past Perfect) as they come in, and catch up on a backlog of artifacts currently in the collection that are not entered in the database. For this job a person can come in any day of the week, once they have been trained in the entry system. As with our docents and cashiers, there is an expectation to put in a minimum of eight hours per month. More time put in monthly will also enable the volunteer to become and stay more proficient in the use of Past Perfect. Knowledge of military items like uniforms, weapons and hardware items is a definite plus in this job, as one has to be able enter in the dtatbase what the item is and then identify what grouping in Past Perfect it will fit under.

Volunteer: Make Friendly Phone Calls to Seniors in your Community (Waukesha County)

We are putting out a call for volunteers to join the Friendly Phone Call program! This program pairs an Eras client with a volunteer to have regular conversations by phone. The Friendly Phone Call program is a longer-term commitment (12+ weeks) and seeks to decrease social isolation and reduce the feelings of loneliness in our clients.

How does it work?

The volunteer will complete an application, be screened, and matched with a client(s). The volunteer calls the client to introduce themselves and, along with the client, decides when and how often they should connect (usually between 2-4 times a month, with calls typically lasting 20 minutes or less- but may be longer if time permits). After each call, the volunteer lets Eras know whether they were able to connect with the client (through a quick email, phone call, or online survey). If a client asks for a ride, assistance, resources, or has questions or concerns, volunteers should refer them to our main line. Eras staff will follow up on any additional needs that the client has. Repeat!

To sign up to volunteer for this or other opportunities, please visit our website: https://eras.org/volunteer/become-a-volunteer/ or call us at 414-488-6931 and we can assist you over the phone.

Volunteer: Senior Medicare Patrol - Help Educate Medicare Beneficiaries in WI

The SMP program offers volunteers an opportunity to make an important difference in their communities throughout Wisconsin.

Thank you for your interest in the Senior Medicare Patrol volunteer program. As a volunteer, you will play a vital role in the overall success of the Wisconsin SMP. The information that you will impart as a volunteer will help seniors in your community to become better health care consumers. Together we can inform and empower Medicare beneficiaries, their families and caregivers on how to protect, detect, and report Medicare fraud, abuses and errors. By volunteering, you will have an opportunity to use your talents, skills, and networking to provide outreach and education on Medicare fraud in your community. Volunteer involvement ranges from distributing materials, staffing a booth at conferences and outreach events, to giving group presentations. A description of these three activities is below.

Information distributor: As a distributor, you help to transport and distribute SMP information materials to various sites, kiosks, or senior centers throughout your community where information resources are made available to residences. In this role, you do not need to engage in discussions with others about personal information or situations. However, you simply note all questions or comments and give them to the Volunteer Coordinator for follow-up. Exhibitor: As an exhibitor, you help to staff an informational table or booth at community events such as senior resources fairs, wellness expos, health workshops, conferences, civic or faith-based organizations, food pantries, libraries, or non-profit agencies. In this role, you provide information about the program to the attendees and answer basic questions related to how to prevent, detect and report Medicare fraud, abuse and errors. Presenter: As a presenter, you give presentations about the fundamentals of SMP to small and large groups. The role includes the opportunity for you to interact with the audience. If time allows, additional interaction will occur through Q & A and discussion at the end of the presentation. The presentations vary in length from 15 to 60 minutes. Depending on the time allotment and the audience, the presentations may involve a PowerPoint presentation, or an engagement activity called The FUNdamentals of Patrolling Health Care.

All positions require some training and an orientation. Training is provided both in-person and online. We want to provide you with the information and background you’ll need to be knowledgeable and capable of responding to questions from members of the community. The last two roles also require a background check.

Volunteer: Share your America - Host an exchange student!

international Experience (iE), with US Department of State support, is planning to welcome exchange students to the US for the 2020-21 school year.  We continue to monitor recommendations from the CDC, WHO and Department of State, and will adjust our program as necessary, always acting with student and host family health in mind.  Reaching out for more info or even registering on our website does NOT obligate you to host if your family should reconsider later this summer.

So now that all of my disclaimers are out of the way... let's jump in to what we're looking for!

A volunteer host family fills the place of a parent during a student's exchange year/semester abroad.  We're looking for families/adults/empty nesters/single adults/parents with toddlers/parents with teens (there are LOTS of types of families!) who will provide a safe & caring home environment, basic room & board (3 meals/day and a permanent bed - can share a room with a host sibling of the same gender within 3 years of age), and reasonable transportation (to & from team practices, rides to the mall, pick-ups from a friend's house, etc).

We have a vetting process for host families to ensure the safety of all - including an online application (www.ie-usa.org), a criminal background check (for any family member 18+ living at home full time) and in-home interview.  We also call references as provided in the application.  Students go through a similar vetting process, and also need teacher's recommendations and a English proficiency exam.  iE requires a minimum English language score in order to gain admittance into the program.

Students come with a willingness and openness to learn - about a new culture, a new high school, a new family, a new city/state - and also to share about their country and way of life.  Host families can gain a relationship that can truly last a lifetime.

We have several Local Coordinators in your area who would love to help you with this experience!

Reach out today for more information or just to have a conversation about what hosting could look like for your family.  Call/text Regional Director Judy at 920-241-3878 or email j.hintz@international-experience.net.  If hosting isn't right for you but you know someone who would make a PERFECT host family, make a referral on our website and earn $200!  https://www.ie-usa.org/make-a-referral/host-family-referral-200/

We are currently looking for help in the garden as we start the 2025 gardening season! Please contact us if you want to be on our volunteer list!

Want to help solve hunger? Assist us in growing food for those in need! Through a partnership with Madison Area Food Pantry Gardens, the Catholic Multicultural Center has a .75 acre garden (Emmett Schulte Garden) to grow fresh produce to provide our food pantry guests with all the produce they can use as well as provide fresh, local ingredients for our meal program.

Volunteer: Volunteer Mentors

Kinship of Polk County is looking for caring, supportive and reliable adults to come alongside at-risk youth.  Kinship matches spend time together three to four times each month engaging in activities such as fishing, gardening, biking, playing ball, cooking, and doing things that they both enjoy – TOGETHER! In spending regular and consistent time together, Kinship kids not only gain exposure to new ideas, but gain confidence in themselves, respect for others, and most importantly, they learn that other people care about them.

Kinship mentors are carefully screened through a regulated process. This screening includes an application, three references, a police background check, as well as an in-home interview with a Kinship Coordinator. Once an applicant gets through this screening process, the coordinator identifies a good match based primarily on personality compatibility, shared interests, and proximity to one another.

Volunteer: Volunteer Host Families Needed!

International Experience (iE) is in need of volunteer host families for exchange students arriving this fall.

Now, I know what you’re probably thinking… how on earth could our family decide to host an overseas student at a time like this?!   Well, iE will not bring students into an unsafe situation. We always follow the guidelines of the Department of State, so if they feel it is unsafe then the students won't come. These students are also not set to arrive until August, and it would be nice if our lives looked different then than they do now.

Student exchanges became popular after World War II, and are intended to increase the participants' understanding and tolerance of other cultures, as well as improving their language skills and broadening their social horizons. Student exchanges also increased further after the end of the Cold War.  It is safe to say that the global COVID-19 pandemic is another experience showing we are all people, no matter what country or location we call home.

I'm happy to chat, so please ask me any questions you'd like.  Contact me via phone/text at 920-241-3878 or email j.hintz@international-experience.net.

Volunteer: SAFE Food Pantry Gardening - Build Community While Helping our Neighbors

WE are the NEW Forward Garden - We plant, tend, and grow produce at a network of gardens. We donate all of this to local food pantries in need of fresh healthy additions to their shelves.  WE have all of the equipment and will provide instructions.

Come and enjoy the out-of-doors with fresh air and watch a miracle of small seeds become fresh wholesome vegetables.

Helping out in a garden with fresh air and lots of sun would actually be a benefit to all.  Volunteers need to keep in mind:

Those volunteers who are showing signs of any physical illness should not volunteer.  Those who were recently in contact with people showing signs of illness should not volunteer. Volunteers should know the exact roles and responsibilities expected by the site and the health and safety policies of the site.  Each site should have hand washing station, and hand sanitation. Volunteers are encouraged to wash hands when arriving and leaving the garden.  Volunteers are to bring their own gloves, dress appropriately and wear sturdy shoes. Volunteers should know the exact roles and responsibilities expected by the site. Follow instructions or be sure to ask for directions. Observe the 10 person limit and overall, maintain 6-feet of distance from those around you.

Volunteer: On-Call Volunteer Advocate

Reach Counseling provides crisis intervention and emotional support 24/7 to survivors of sexual assault and their friends/family with the help of Volunteer Victim Advocates. Volunteer Advocates are on call during shifts of their choosing and can be over nights, on weekends, and holidays when the Reach office is closed. We are additionally seeking volunteers to help respond to crisis calls during daytime hours between 7am-5pm.

Volunteer Advocates are trained to provide emotional support, crisis intervention, information and resources to survivors of sexual abuse and assault in Winnebago, Outagamie, and Calumet Counties. Advocates provide these services over the phone or in person at a local hospital. Advocates work alongside medical and legal professionals to ensure survivors are supported while navigating these processes, reducing further trauma and re-victimization while tending to a survivor’s emotional needs.

Advocates will work with nurses and law enforcement to provide wrap-around, compassionate care while a survivor receives a forensic exam and/or gives a statement to the police. Advocates respond to Aurora Medical Center and Mercy in Oshkosh, ThedaCare and St. Elizabeth's in Appleton, with the option to sign up for Calumet County Hospital in Chilton coverage as well. Volunteers choose which regions (Appleton, Oshkosh, Chilton) they would like to cover when on call.

Advocates must have a driver's license, car insurance and vehicle while on call. Advocates take calls through their own phones and never have to be at the Reach office while on call. Advocates must be aware they will hear details of sexual abuse and assault and should know how hearing these stories will impact them. Advocates are in charge of how many and which shifts they take and the schedule is very flexible. Advocates, whether staff or volunteer, are not allowed to provide transportation for clients.

Volunteer: 2,500 Items Needed! 2025 St. Joseph Academy Angel Shop Drive

Do you sometimes receive little odds and ends that you don't want, can't use and usually throw into a closet to collect dust? Did you purchase something on clearance, but now it's sitting in a closet collecting dust? Are you or do you know a business who would be willing to donate their final clearance items to us? Or do you just have some new or gently used items you're clearing out of the house? Please consider donating those new or gently used items to us.

In December 2025 we will hold our 5th Annual Angel Shop where Early Childhood & K4-8th students can shop for family members at $1-$5 a gift for that special someone in their lives. This allows them to be part of the process and spirit of giving. Students learn financial literacy skills, learn to independently shop, and they gain a true sense of pride and accomplishment from participating. We will be collecting items year round for children, teens, adult, and older adults (even Pets!).

So please start putting those bags together with that candle you didn't want or hand soap you can't use or the extra screwdriver set you have lying around, that too small wallet, ties, men's cologne, women's perfume, the adult coloring book that was supposed to be calming, but just isn't, soccer and sports items, baseball hats, etc. Additionally, we are also accepting donations of wrapping paper, gift bags, tissue paper, scotch tape, gift tags and bows and ribbons.

Donations are being accepted until Friday, December 5.  Help us to make this an amazing experience for our kids. Please contact Kim Schubring, Director of Resource Development for drop-off instructions or for more information at (414) 645-5337 ext. 247 or email kschubring@sjamilwaukee.org.

Want to volunteer to help kids shop during our Angel Shop? Contact Kim in November - December for more details.

Volunteer: The Women's Community: Volunteer to be a Shelter Advocate

Shelter Advocates are crucial to assisting staff with answering the support line. Relieving staff from answering the support line and assisting residents allows them to meet with clients, go to court, take walk-ins, and more! In 2023, the support line took over 2700 calls. Volunteers will learn about the dynamics of abuse, how to be an advocate, learn office skills, work on listening skills, and more!

Volunteers provide information about safety planning, referrals, community resources, emergency shelter, and our domestic abuse and sexual assault services. Hours are generally weekdays between 7 am and 5 pm. Previous experience is not required, training will be provided. Must be 18 years old.

This role is mainly stationary, available to sit or stand as needed, but needs to operate an analog phone, a desktop computer utilizing Outlook email and internet, and buttons to open the door.

Volunteer: Building and grounds maintenance.

MVM is looking for volunteers to help us in our mission to educate and preserve the history of our military veterans.

The museum has several needs when it comes to maintenance of its buildings and grounds. Items include things like lawn mowing, brush clearing, weed pulling, flower watering, window washing and overall floor scrubbing/mopping of the motor pool area. The museum is also interested in professional volunteers like electricians and heating/cooling specialists, that would be willing to donate all or part of their time dealing with maintenance of parts of the building requiring a licensed professional. There are also parts of the original building construction that need a final coat of paint over the original primer.

These needs would be great for groups.

Volunteer: Cashier

MVM is looking for volunteers to help us in our mission to educate and preserve the history of our military veterans.

Cashiers often are the first friendly face visitors see when they visit the museum. In addition to overseeing the PX/gift shop and checking out people’s purchases, they greet people as they enter the building, asking if they have visited the museum before and if they are a veteran. Visitors are asked to sign into the guest book. There currently is no admission fee to visit the museum, although people are told donations are greatly appreciated. Cashiers then give a brief description of the museum and ask the visitors if they would prefer a docent take them around or just go through on their own. The visitor is then handed off to the docent, or the docent is informed the visitor chooses to do a self-tour. As with the docents, the days cashiers are scheduled is open to the calendar of the volunteer, and a person can do either half or full day on the day they are scheduled. The expectation for a cashier is that they put in a minimum of eight hours per month.

Volunteer: Docent

The Military Veterans Museum and Education center provides a unique experience for its visitors when they come through the door. Each visitor is offered a personalized tour by one of our docents no matter what time they arrive at the museum. In order to accomplish this, MVM needs a solid group of docents to be on site and ready to deliver the personalized tour. It is our hope you will consider to be a part of this group in helping educate the public about the history of our veterans.

Docents at the Museum are central to museum operations on days when it is open, and they have several duties they perform as part of their job. These duties include unlocking the museum at the opening of business, turning on lights and audio-visual equipment, and checking that all is in order prior to our visitor’s arrival. At the close of business, they shut things down and lock up prior to leaving.

As the name indicates, the main job of our docents at the museum is to teach. They are available to give a full or partial tour of the museum on request or are simply available to answer the questions of guests if they choose to do a self-tour. Currently the museum has no formal script for giving visitors tours. New docents learn as they go, following experienced docents as they give tours to visitors. Knowledge of military history and wars will be helpful for a person filling this position, but it is not required. Docents are also involved in handling group tours scheduled at the museum, to possibly include setting up and taking down chairs and tables. The day a docent is scheduled is open to the calendar of the volunteer, and a person can do either half or full day on the day they are scheduled. The expectation for a docent is that they put in a minimum of eight hours per month.
