Volunteer: Tone Chime Choir Conductor Or Assistant

A volunteer is needed to take over for the Music Therapist as Tone Chime Choir Conductor or start out helping the therapist as Tone Chime Choir Assistant for the Oakwood Village University Woods resident Tone Chime Choir starting in February 2026.

The commitment would require a volunteer conductor or assistant to be involved weekly with 1 hour rehearsals.  In addition, the commitment would also require a conductor or assistant to be involved with and lead 2-4 performances during the year, which can be for Sunday morning worship services or concerts for residents at University Woods.  Currently 8-12 University Woods residents are involved in the Tone Chime Choir.

A prospective volunteer needs to have Tone Chime experience if possible.  The current tone chime choir is an adapted one that uses symbols to read notes and chords so any resident can participate regardless of musical background.  A new conductor or assistant could keep the adapted approach or use the more traditional approach of reading sheet music.  A full tone chime choir set is available for the choir to use and is stored on campus.

This volunteer need will be under the supervision of the Oakwood Village certified Music Therapist on staff.  The therapist will provide training for a new volunteer to be ready and comfortable in the role of conductor or assistant.

NOTE: No volunteers are needed to join and participate as Tone Chime Choir members.  Only volunteers with Tone Chime experience are needed to help in a leadership/assistant position.

Prospective volunteers will need to get registered with the Oakwood Village University Woods Volunteer Services Coordinator first to be set up.  Registration includes taking care of paperwork, background screening and TB skin tests.  It will be about a 3-week process.

Volunteer: FIRST Robotics Competition- Volunteers Needed

Under strict rules, with limited time and resources, FIRST® Robotics Competition teams use sophisticated technology to build and program industrial-sized robots to play an action-packed, alliance-based game on a themed field. With professional mentors and sponsors, students learn engineering and problem-solving skills that they can apply to real-world situations today and in the future. Each team creates a team identity, raises funds to meet its goals, and works to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) in their community.

Each FIRST Robotics Competition season culminates with district and regional events where qualifying teams compete for awards and a spot at the FIRST Championship. Events offer students an amazing experience as they celebrate their hard work, have fun, make new friendships, and are exposed to ideas and ideology that will enhance their lives for decades to come.

Students develop a sense of accomplishment and confidence while they:

collaborate and share ideas, compete with, repair, and upgrade their robots, engage with cutting edge technology, creatively solve problems, interview with volunteer judges, and have fun.

To learn more about the FIRST Robotics Community, please visit FIRST | For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (firstinspires.org)

Volunteer: Biochar Branch Monitor

NEW OPPORTUNITY! Biochar Branch Monitors (FKA Climate Catalyst Sessions)

Help us turn innovative ideas into real-world impact by becoming a Biochar Branch Monitor! We’re tracking nearly 500 native and climate-resilient trees planted across Kenosha, Racine, Port Washington, Sheboygan, Two Rivers, and Green Bay—and we need your help to collect the data that will shape future urban conservation efforts. Our treatment group of newly planted trees received biochar, a soil amendment designed to improve soil health and support long-term tree success; Our control group was planted without the biochar soil amendment. By monitoring these trees, you’ll play a direct role in helping us understand how biochar affects urban tree canopy growth and resilience over time.

No experience? No problem! We’ll provide all the training and materials you need. Monitoring is flexible and can be done independently, with a partner, or as a family activity. Join us and be part of hands-on science that’s helping our communities, our trees, and birds thrive.

Before jumping in, all volunteers are REQUIRED to participate in a brief VIRTUAL training led by Observatory staff to get you ready for this hands-on community science experience. Below you’ll find the upcoming training dates and times—we’d love to have you join us!

Agency: George W. Mead Wildlife Area

Volunteers will enjoy a day at the George W. Mead Wildlife Area, where they will assist with teaching lessons. Lesson topics include survival strategies, nature hikes, foraging, birding, orienteering, fly tying, and much more. Most lessons are taught outdoors.

Groups range in ages, from kindergarten to senior. Volunteers will arrive half an hour before the group and leave once the group departs. A typical day would be 8:30-2:30, though exact timing varies by group. They will be responsible for leading one lesson; the lesson is scripted and all materials will be out and ready upon arrival.
