Volunteers are a vital part of the HorseSense for Special Riders program, which teaches horseback riding to individuals with disabilities. Up to three volunteers are often utilized per rider with one as a horse leader and two as side walkers. Without our volunteers, we wouldn't be able to do what we do. Every volunteer is a vital part of making our program function. We are always looking for volunteers to be a part of our program. Every volunteer has the chance to make an impact and connection with our riders.
*There will be no lesson sessions for the week of July 3rd. Have a happy 4th of July!*
Lesson Volunteers
The lesson volunteers work directly with the instructors to provide assistance prior to, during, and after lessons. The main responsibilities include participating in the lesson by being a horse leader or side walker.
Horse Leader
All horse leaders will help with the horses including tasks like grooming and tacking up. They also lead the horses during lessons. Leaders must have horse experience or have volunteered with HSSR for at least a year.
Side Walker
As a side walker, you will assist the rider in following instructions to the best of their ability by walking next to them and providing hands on support if needed. No experience is necessary as you are supported and guided by the instructor.

- Minimum age to volunteer is 14 years of age and minimum age for horse leaders is 15 years of age.
- Be able to walk and jog in sand and uneven ground
- Dress in barn appropriate and professional clothing with sturdy footwear

Lesson Absences
If you know you will be gone, please give at least a week's notice so the HSSR staff can find a sub. You can also call (608) 791-4868. Your rider is dependent on you to be there and substitute volunteers are hard to find at the last minute.
Weather Cancellations
HSSR will cancel lessons in weather extremes including, but not limited to; temperature extremes, high winds, tornado warnings, severe thunderstorms or lightning. Call HSSR at (608) 791-4868 two hours prior to your session for notification of cancellation. The answering service will have a recorded message indicating if lessons are cancelled.
Confidentiality
Confidentiality is a policy that we adhere to, to the best of our ability, and we ask all that volunteers to adhere to this policy as well. We are leasing this facility from a private party. Please observe and respect the parking areas. Please respect the family’s and rider's privacy.
