Through our "Vets for Vets" program, veteran volunteers will have the unique ability to support our veteran patients who are terminally ill. Heartland Hospice volunteers help to support and enhance the quality of life of those they visit. Bringing the gift of friendship to our patients through regular visits, these volunteers offer services such as: companionship by just being present for the patient and offering to talk or assisting with non-medical tasks; emotional support through listening, sharing experiences and stories; allowing for expression of feelings; holding a hand; giving a needed hug; offering words of comfort; and respite support by staying with the patient while the caregiver enjoys a moment alone to run errands, make appointments, or simply take time to care for themselves.

We recognize that veterans share a special bond among each other. The goal of our "Vets for Vets" program is to match veteran patients with a hospice-trained veteran who may have a similar background. All patient visitation volunteers receive training regarding the philosophy of hospice, the role of the volunteer and other staff members, as well as, helpful skills in caring for and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Volunteers in our veterans program also receive additional training focused on a veteran's specific needs. Volunteer hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability.

Interested applicants will: be at least 18-years-old, complete initial application paperwork, agree to a background and reference check, attend a volunteer orientation and complete two TB tests. Support may involve prayer (reading from the Bible or other material that is comforting for patient), providing respite to family (allowing them to step away and eat a meal/take a break) or simply being present...providing comfort and peace of mind to all that the patient is not alone.

Our Vigil Volunteer program is more of an "on-call" opportunity; vigil support is based upon request of patient's family or caregiving team. Scheduling of vigil takes into consideration the volunteer's location and availability.

We are looking for more pet/handler teams to enrich the lives or our hospice patient (in Racine or Kenosha County) by making regular visits to provide companionship and meaningful activities between animal and patient. Service hours are flexible and scheduled according to your availability and location. Volunteers and their furry friends have the power to bring the greatest gifts to our patients' lives . . . a smile and reassurance that comes with knowing they are genuinely cared for. If you have a friendly canine that has a lot of love to give and spreads joy wherever she/he goes, this is the opportunity for you!

If your dog is currently certified through an approved, reputable therapy animal agency, you can immediately apply to become a Heartland Hospice volunteer.

Is your pet not certified? We will happily assist you with this process. Once your pet is certified and registered, you will be trained to become a Heartland Hospice volunteer (i.e., attend an orientation, fill out an application/paperwork, etc). Handlers must be at least 18 years of age, agree to a background and reference check, and have reliable transportation.

In addition to providing music, volunteers provide much needed socialization and one-on-one support. Service hours are flexible and scheduled according to your location and availability. Musician volunteers have the power to bring the greatest gifts to our patients' lives . .  uplifting music, a smile and reassurance that they are genuinely cared for! Qualifications of musician volunteers: must be 18 years or older; agree to a background/reference check; and attend an orientation to learn more about the philosophy of hospice and our company, the role of the volunteer and communicating with hospice patients and their families. Do you live in Kenosha County? Do you enjoy making crafts? Can you crochet and/or knit? Turn your hobby into healing by becoming a craft volunteer . . . all from the comforts of your own home! Heart Hospice needs more talented craft volunteers to donate items that will bring comfort to patients facing life-limiting illnesses. The sky's the limit when it comes to what will bring a smile to a patient's face, but some suggestions include: crocheted lap blankets/shawls/slipper, cards for every occasion (birthdays, holidays, "thinking of you", etc), veterans appreciation items, stuffed animals (teddy bears) or any other craft item that will brighten a patient's room. 

Once you have items ready to donate, staff will gladly pick them up at the volunteer's destination of choice or donations can be dropped off at our Kenosha business office.
